Shining example: The new outdoor light “Valis Pro”
Wind energy is now one of the cornerstones of the energy transition in Germany, and demand continues to grow. In 2023 alone, wind turbines generated almost a third of Germany's gross electricity. This also increases the importance of safe, reliable electronic solutions inside towers. With the new Valis Pro outdoor luminaire, Wieland Electric presents a robust and standard-compliant solution for lighting modern wind turbines. The result: greater safety through light, and greater safety for electrical installations.
High demands at height
By 2030, the installed capacity of wind turbines in Germany is expected to rise to 115 gigawatts; currently, it is around 60 gigawatts. Technological developments have also taken a significant step forward: The average rated output of new turbines has nearly quadrupled in the last two decades, from around 1 megawatt in the early 2000s to over 5 megawatts per turbine today.
These developments pose significant challenges for planning, installation, and operation. Modern wind towers are highly complex industrial facilities whose total height can reach up to 200 meters, equivalent to approximately 70 stories. Individual turbines, such as those located in Lusatia, even reach heights of up to 400 meters.
Such dimensions create extreme environmental conditions – from strong vibrations and temperature fluctuations to humidity and dust. This places the highest demands on installation systems, power distribution, and overall operational reliability. Conventional solutions with numerous individual components, manual wiring, and complex planning not only result in high costs and time expenditure but also pose numerous potential sources of error.
Compliance with safety-relevant standards, such as EN ISO 50308:2005, is particularly sensitive. Without systematic planning and precisely coordinated components, their implementation in practice can hardly be reliably ensured.
Bright joy in the wind tower
With the new Valis Pro outdoor luminaire from Wieland Electric, electrical planners, electrical installers, operators, and especially senior power plant employees are provided with a light that lasts, even during a power outage. The luminaire – manufactured using multi-layer encapsulation – is extremely robust. It complies with protection class IP69, meaning it is completely dustproof, protected against vibration and shock, and protected against water. It is resistant to ambient temperatures from -40°C to +70°C and has a shock resistance of IK10.
The design of the luminaire with its shielded cable ensures maximum protection against surge transients. As a system supplier, Wieland offers not only the luminaire itself, but also modular, industrial-grade system solutions needed for complete installations – from pre-assembled gesisRST round cables to new power supplies and customized UPS (uninterruptible power supply) solutions.
In addition, Wieland Electric's simulation calculation service provides a precise planning basis for customer-specific applications that is fully aligned with the requirements of EN ISO 50308:2005 and thus ensures that all safety-relevant aspects are taken into account.
Premiere at HUSUM WIND
The new Valis Pro outdoor luminaire and the new wipos PSU3 power supplies will be celebrating their premiere at HUSUM Wind 2025, the leading trade fair for the German-speaking wind energy industry. Wieland Electric will be presenting this innovative solution to the public for the first time there in Husum from September 16 to 19. Interested trade visitors can find the company in Hall 2, Booth 2C06.
Robust, safe and compliant with standards: the new Valis Pro outdoor luminaire from Wieland Electric provides reliable lighting even under extreme conditions in wind towers.
